Trauma survivors frequently face challenges related to nervous system regulation. Their bodies may remain in a state of heightened alertness or shut down as a defense mechanism. Somatic experiencing, a therapeutic approach focused on the body’s sensations, aims to help individuals reconnect with their bodies, process traumatic experiences, and restore balance to their nervous systems. When someone has experienced trauma, being their authentic self might have been associated with danger or rejection. Encouraging them to ‘be yourself’ without understanding their history can inadvertently invalidate their experiences and the coping mechanisms they’ve developed.
